Setting Effort Goals
|
Many of us here at Responsible Sports, as big sports fans, watched in amazement the first week of February when NBA Basketball had a first: Kobe Bryant posted a 61-point game in New York’s Madison Square Garden, followed by LeBron James who nearly recorded a triple-double along with his season high 52 points. But what caught our attention was the story that emerged when the NBA determined that LeBron fell short of his triple-double, determining that one of his rebounds should have been attributed to a teammate.
While both men clearly demonstrated exceptional effort, it’s LeBron’s performance that really had us thinking about youth sports and the idea of effort goals. By the stats keepers, LeBron’s game was not nearly as successful as Kobe’s. And yet his effort was exactly what his team, his coach, and he himself set out to accomplish.

Nominations close February 28th for the Responsible Coaching Awards.
Liberty Mutual is seeking to recognize a youth sports coach from each state for demonstrating on-going commitment to the well-being and development of youth athletes, exhibiting a high level of coaching competence, and honoring and respecting the game. Your coach could join Chris Judge (Soccer – Albia, IA) in the Winner’s Circle! Nominate your favorite coach before February 28th!

Registration is now open for the Spring 2009 Responsible Sports Community Grant period. Not sure if you’re registered? Go to ResponsibleSports.com/Grant to find out! Search for your organization and notify your administrator if you’re not listed. We make it easy. Twenty youth sports organizations will earn a $2,500 Responsible Sports Community Grant from Liberty Mutual this spring. The three-month grant period opens in March. Be sure you’re registered so you don’t lose any time in the race for $2,500!
