Honoring the Game: Officials

This season, NFL referee Ed Hochuli, one of the most respected football officials, missed a call in a game between the San Diego Chargers and the Denver Broncos. With years of officiating training, hundreds of NFL games officiated, and thousands of calls under his belt, he made a mistake. As the quote goes, “To err is human….”

It’s the other half of the phrase, “…to forgive divine” that speaks to the values of Responsible Sports. As many of you know, practicing Responsible Sports means conducting ourselves by a code, which Positive Coaching Alliance calls Honoring the Game. The components of Honoring the Game are easily remembered with the anagram ROOTS, where ROOTS stands for Rules, Opponents, Officials, Teammates and Self. For many of us, we’re tested most when it comes to Officials. Responsible Sports and our partners recommend a few helpful tips to help prepare you for potentially tough situations.
